Final Project
In the end, I feel like my website turned out better than I thought it was going to be. I used circle pad after researching a few different sites and found that circle pad seemed to be the simplest site to use without hindering my ability to create a quality and creative site. I did encounter a few problems, one example is making my portfolio page. In order to get my videos onto my page i had to upload them to youtube and then use a search bar on circlepad to find them and embed them into my site. The problem here was that youtube videos don't show up in searches until about 48 hours after they are uploaded, so i instead had to put pictures of each video onto my portfolio page and link them to their corresponding youtube page. In retrospect i feel my pln could have included a little more as well. This project has helped me to take a lot of the things I learned in this class and put them to practice, and overall I feel it has made me more comfortable using these skills.

Final project (phase one)
My digital portfolio will be about my pursuit of the career of movie director/screenwriter. I am using a site called circlepad to create my website. My home page will be about myself and why i want to achieve this goal. I will have a page for my portfolio, this page will have many of my short projects in video that I have helped me to learn about the field. These include Short stories made in high school and college, small scenes set to movies, opening credits for a movie based on a reality T.V. show, and After Effects special effects projects done at home. Some of these examples are easier to access than others. A video that I recently made is stored in a folder and labeled on my computer, My high school projects however are only on a dvd and are no longer stored on my computer. Using a program called handbrake, I began ripping the video and audio back off of my dvd and onto my computer so they can be uploaded onto my website. As for my after effects projects, they are still on my computer, but in various places. I performed a search of anything involving after affects, and many projects came up, however when i made the projects that turned out good or bad I did most of them mostly for the sake of practice and gave many of them obscure or irrelevant titles with no indication as to what they are. So I've been opening and renaming dozens of "untitled's" and quite a few projects labeled something like "aklfjuwfghn" or "hhhhhhh". Once I sorted the junk from the good, I began the tedious process of finding the projects in which some files have been moved or lost, and recovering and restoring them. In some cases I couldn't. once all of my projects are ready I will upload them to youtube and then link them to the portfolio page of my website. I am also working on a page about exactly what a person in these careers does. Needless to say this portion is giving me much less trouble than my portfolio portion. I also plan on having my pln accessible from my webpage, and finally i will have a page citing my references. It is a work in progress for the time being but hopefully with more time it will develop into a decent website.

The internet allows computers from all around the world to connect to each other. They can also however be connected locally. A group of computers in a particular general area can be connected through a LAN (local area network). An NIC (network interface card) allows a computer to connect to a LAN by connecting to a modem through a hub.
These Lans are used mostly for businesses schools etc. Computers can also be connected across larger areas than an office building or a school, and can be connected in multiple buildings across a city or several buildings in a large area. This is called a MAN (Metropolitan area network). The step higher than a MAN is known as a WAN (wide area network) which is for businesses and such that have buildings in different far away areas that can all be connected over one WAN.

E-mail, for many has become a primary form of communication. To make the process easier for the user, email sites have come up with many tools to help. Chapter four explained many of these, you can organize E-mail in many different ways, whether according to date received, sender's name, ore even sort them into categories. When receiving a message from a sender who's e-mail address was not previously in your contact list, there is a tool that allows you to automatically add them. You can then take your contact list and further divide it into subgroups and so-forth. If there is a message that you would like to remind yourself to take a second look at you can "flag" it, or mark it so it will draw your attention the next time you look at it. This chapter helped me greatly to understand how to make emailing easier and much more convenient for me!

There is a massive amount of websites on the internet today, most of which can be very helpful to a specific person or group's needs. The internet can help you learn new skills, read movie reviews, research colleges, write your resume, even tour online museums, and much more. Financial and educational needs can also be satisfied on the internet through banking websites and web-based learning respectively. When banking or shopping online or working with other sensitive information, one must be carful of the security of the site, most banking websites are extremely secure as to not allow user information to fall into the wrong hands.
Information on the web is not always correct, the credibility of the website is important. One should find sources of the sites information as well as information on the author before believing any information given on the site.

chapter 5
Portals are a huge part of web browsing today. Chapter Five explains that a portal is a way to access a businesses general information (something previously explained in chapter 2). Portals can also lead to information not just about a business but about a particular area of interest. They can be used for consumers, industry etc. There are even personal portals that can be customized to to meet the needs of an individual. The Chapter also explained the new way news is being viewed, on websites. People are using websites to view news, weather, sports etc. These websites are becoming more popular than more traditional forms of receiving news, they are updated quickly so one can get the most current news, It is much more convenient and easy to find exactly what you are looking for news on. The new form of news is clearly much more efficient than the old.

chapter 4

It has defiantly changed the way we communicate for the better but it is not entirely risk free. Different types of viruses lurk within e-mails ready to “attack”. They can be sent in different disguises, and even make the user believe that it is a safe, friendly e-mail. A person then opens the email and the virus is released onto their computer, which become hidden all throughout. Some of these viruses disguise themselves, to fool antivirus software into believing that It belongs on the computer. These are called Trojan horses. Once it has access to the computer it picks up personal information and can delete programs and significantly slow down the computer. Other viruses are more specifically designed to gather the user’s personal information, and can get a hold of any information that you type into your computer, ie: social security number, credit card information etc. Viruses can be very dangerous and one should be very cautious while opening e-mails.

Chapter 3
Finding information in today's society is the quickest and easiest that it has ever been. Search engines such as google, yahoo, and bing are used by millions of people every day. Most people use the search engines most basic feature only. But what many don't know is that using these search engines can be even easier if the engines tools are put to work. For example you can use a word, question or term to help clarify what kind of results you are looking for. This is known as a search query, the query should contain a keyword relating to what you're searching for. You should be carful when choosing your results however, as some websites may be inaccurate and should be avoided, spelling and grammar errors should be your first hint to avoid the website because it may not be a source of viable information. There were many helpful search engine tools and techniques defined in this chapter.
Career Goals
I am in the digital video and audio track of digital media, I am learning to film and edit movies. My long term career goal is to direct movies, but I also have a strong interest in editing and visual effects, and hope to begin with a job in that. Idealy I would like to edit movies (next to directing them) or possibly television shows. I am currently searching for any internships in the field of video/audio or editing. I've found it very difficult to find such internships in the area, but i have been told about a digital effects studio in buffalo and plan to contact them in hopes that they offer an internship program. This class so far has helped me to learn how to better navigate the web. I feel much more fluent in my knowledge of web browsing and websites etc. The world of video and the world of the internet are very much conected in todays society. It would not be easy trying to get a career in digital video with out some knowledge of the internet, so this class has definatly helped me greatly.
Secondlife (3)
Today we edited the video that we recorded with cam studio, each of us took a portion of the film and cut the scenes together in the correct order, we also removed the unnessicary footage. We then got a microphone andbegan recording the voices for each character, and found sound effects to add into it. Despite our terrible acting I think the finnished product will sound okay.
Secondlife (2)
We have finished our storyline, and recently began recording our video. We are using a program called cam studio to record each scene. We are recording most scenes with three camera angles. It is more difficult than I expected to make each scene look the way we imagined. However, Despite having a few casual secondlife useres occasionally getting in the way, everything is going smoothly
second life (1)
My group and I recently began planning our secondlife machinima project. we began by simply discussing possible plots and events for our video. Once we had the basic idea down for our storyline, we needed costumes and props, so we began searching secondlife for areas with free stuff. We collected anything that we thought we might be able to use in our video. I am learning how to navigate better in secondlife and different ways to aquire objects.

Chapter 2
Of all of the information gained from chapter two, I chose to talk about IP addresses. It is a term that I use and hear very often but I rarely give any thought to. IP stands for "internet protocol" It is a numeric code representing an individual computer, its purpose is to tell computers sending the information exactly where to send it. As the book put it: it is much like a house address that tells the mail service exactly where to send the physical information. Some computers have a permanent, never changing IP address, this is known as a static IP address this is generally for computers that are in constant connection with the internet. Other computers that are not constantly connected to the internet, such as computers that use a dial up connection are given a temporary IP address each time they connect to the internet. IP addresses can have user friendly codes in the form of words and titles that are easier to remember, these are called domain names. IP addresses allow the internet to be used efficiently to transfer information from computer to computer and domain names make it more user friendly.

net neutrality
After reading articles about net neutrality, I am not exactly sure where I stand on the issue. Net neutrality regulations would not allow companies to slow down bandwidth in order to help their business or hurt other businesses, this is defiantly a good thing about net neutrality. It also would not allow companies to charge people for access to their websites, this is where I’m not sure if it should be legal or not. As an internet user I, of course, don’t want companies to charge for their websites or to have to buy a website package each month, but I don’t see any moral problem with it. We pay for the internet service, but why shouldn’t the companies be able to charge money for using their websites, We pay companies for their television channels, why can’t a company ask for a fee before visiting their website? I don’t think it is a very good idea, but I don’t think it should be illegal for a company to charge for the use of something that they own.

Back and Forward buttons
Another way to make browsing easier to use specific buttons to view recently viewed web pages. This allows one to quickly move from one page to a page one has recently left. two popular buttons are the back and foreword buttons. Once you leave a page, rather than retyping the address you can simply click the back button. Now if you want to get back to the second page you can click the forward button.
Opening your browsers
To open your browser On a pc you can double click on the browsers icon on the desktop or in a folder, or you can open the start menu and click on the browser icon. However when working on a mac there is no start menu available, though it wasn't mentioned in the book, there is a dock at the bottom of the screen instead
Browsing tabs
Web browsers have several features to make browsing quicker and easier for the users. One example is the feature allowing you to open multiple web pages in different "tabs". While browsing the web you can click the new tab button to open a blank tab, in this tab you can open up another website without closing the other site.

Chapter 1
The beginning of this chapter seemed to be a review of the basic knowledge most people have about the internet. It described what the internet is generally used for, and specifically explained many of the activities that are performed everyday online. It did however, give a few definitions, to terms and abbreviations that are used everyday but perhaps not always understood by the user. The next part of the chapter: The History of the Internet, is where the much less known information was explained. It was interesting to say the least, explaining the origins of the internet and different types of connections that either failed or succeeded. It went through each step the internet took from being used solely by the government to protect data by connecting multiple computers to developing into the sophisticated tool used by the general public, the government, and businesses today.
